Handmade Feature & Giveaway – Lemon Jitters

February 17, 2010 separator giveaway

I’m soooo excited about today’s featured shop because Katie, the brilliance behind the whole shebang, is one of my favorite people ever. She’s one of the most creative people I’ve ever met. Seriously, she even put the most adorable logo for my latest project! You might recognize her from her What’s in My Pantry? vlog, but if you’ve never heard of her, get ready to be dazzled. Lemon Jitters has some of the most creative, upcycled, vintage-inspired, and straight up vintage jewelry you’ve ever seen, and it all starts at the ridiculously low price of $4!!!

Q. What’s the story behind Lemon Jitters?

A. I’ve been creative and crafty all my life thanks to my genes and my mom’s influence. I just never focused my creativity in any particular area until last year. I often found myself looking at jewelry and saying, “if only it didn’t have that on it or it was shorter, etc.” Plus I had some broken necklaces lying around that I really wanted back. Last summer I started working on those ideas and then Lemon Jitters was born.

Q. How do you incorporate an eco-friendly aspect into your shop? A. When I set up shop, I made it my goal to try to incorporate vintage findings in all of my pieces. I love buying new old stock (NOS- vintage jewelry parts that have been sitting in closed factories for years). But my favorite purchases are the thrift store finds because those are totally unique. I usually only make one design from those pieces. I also like to repurpose old fabric and notions!

Q. What advice do you have for new Etsy sellers?

A. Read, read, read. Seriously. Do your research. Start out knowing what the experts know (which is totally accessible via the Storque, forums, and other sites).

Q. Finish my sentences: A. When it rains, I get to slosh through puddles in my super cute red rain boots!
Seventeen is an okay number, but not a desirable age.
If I could never eat a McDonald’s sausage biscuit loaded with calories and sodium again, then I’d die instead. (okay, maybe not. but probably. actually, i might die because of the biscuit consumption.)

Q. Do you have any tips for shop owners who would like to break into the wholesale business?

A. Why yes, I do. Selling wholesale is very satisfying. Here are my tips. And some free wholesale templates to jump start your wholesale business!

Q. If you could only watch one movie for the rest of your life, which would it be, and why?

A. I’m not much of a movie watcher. If I could only watch one tv show it would be Curb Your Enthusiasm. Because painful humor is the best kind. And CYE has lots of that – the situations are so awkward that it is painful. Painfully delightful.

Q. What’s the kindest thing anybody has ever done for you?

A. At one of my elementary school parties a friend gave me a 101 Dalmations glitter necklace. Totally not my style. I politely said thank you but then later made a face to my mom when I told her I didn’t really like it. My mom gently informed me that the girl’s family was very poor and that necklace was one of the girl’s very own. I felt so stupid. Later I made a point to profusely thank the girl for her gift. I still remember how nice she was. I also remember wondering if I would ever be able to give up one of my toys for someone else. Ah, those life lessons…

Q. Most embarrassing moment ever?

A. It was 7th grade year. Sister Catherine’s English class. It was my second period. By period, I mean menstrual cycle, not second period P.E. Being the forgetful child that I was, I still hadn’t put extra feminine products in my backpack. I quietly (and fervently) mouthed/mimed my predicament to my more mature friend, Gretchen. She tries to subtly pass a pad my way. Sister Catherine’s eagle eyes and too-tight hair bun pierced my soul with terror just as I accepted the pad. GROAN. I knew what was coming. Sister Catherine’s had a rule that anyone caught passing notes had to immediately report to the front of the class with the note in hand. IN FRONT OF EVERYONE. I sat there, hand stretched out across the aisle, silently begging Sister to show some of that mercy we were always hearing about. Right on cue, she demanded I bring the ‘note’ to her immediately. Not only did she have to squint and put her glasses on to figure out that it was in fact, not a note, she verbally excused me to go the restroom in her I-forgot-my-hearing-aid voice (aka loud). All of this happened in front of a roomful of 7th grade girls and BOYS. Mortifying.

You may be thinking that story is too perfect to be true. And you would be right. It didn’t actually happen, but I wish it had. At least then I would have a legit answer to this question.

Q. What inspires your jewelry pieces? A. This shop This blog. Lots of blogs. Colors. Colors haphazardly ending up next to each other. My supply boxes. Vintage ephemera. Vintage fabric and designs. Outfits that need jewelry.

Q. Write us a haiku.
A. Autumn is mourning;
yearning for nothing and all.
Grief and peace again.

My goodness- why don’t I write about cupcakes or rainbows?

Q. What’s your favorite quote?

A. Oh goodness. It’s a toss up. They are kind of long, so bear with me.

“There are these moments when the enemy all of the sudden becomes just like me. When a soldier becomes a son. When a prostitute becomes a mother. When they become we. When those become us. When he becomes me.

Moments when all of the ways that we divide ourselves and rank each other and convince ourselves of how different, better, and unalike we are disappear, and we are faced with the fact that first and foremost, we are humans. In this together. And not that much different than each other.

Jew. Gentile.
Marine. Iraqi.
Orphan. Family.
Pastor. Prostitute.

We could be them.

-Rob Bell, in Sex God

And…

“…a man’s suffering is similar to the behavior of gas. If a certain quantity of gas is pumped into an empty chamber, it will fill the chamber completely and evenly, no matter how big the chamber. Thus suffering completely fills the human soul and conscious mind, no matter whether the suffering is great or little. Therefore the ‘size’ of human suffering is absolutely relative.”

-Victor Frankl, Man’s Search for Meaning, 1959, Holocaust survivor and founder of Logotherapy

  83. My Favourite Quote:

You must know… surely, you must know it was all for you. You are too generous to trifle with me. I believe you spoke with my aunt last night, and it has taught me to hope as I’d scarcely allowed myself before. If your feelings are still what they were last April, tell me so at once. My affections and wishes have not changed, but one word from you will silence me forever. If, however, your feelings have changed, I will have to tell you: you have bewitched me, body and soul, and I love, I love, I love you. I never wish to be parted from you from this day on.
