a heartbreaking loss

my little pool baby
Yesterday my mom called to tell  me that Nikki, our sweet little old lady, was gone. She was 15 years old and passed away in her sleep. They found her with our other dog and both our cats laying with her; they all loved her so much and were right there with her the whole time. I don’t normally get this personal on here, but I was looking through all my pictures, and I just had to share these. She was such a wonderful part of our lives, and it kills me that she’s gone. I really feel like we’ve lost a member of the family. She was so frail and couldn’t really see or hear anymore, and I know that she’s in a better place now, but it is so hard knowing that I’m never going to see her again.

Please keep our sweet lady and my parents in your thoughts and prayers; I know that they miss her terribly, and it’s going to be a difficult adjustment not having her around anymore.

  1. oh goodness! i’m so sad to hear that! my dog (i had her for 13 years) died a couple of years ago and i felt the same way; we lost a part of the family. It took me a while to “get over it” and even still sometimes i call her when i drop food or something. You can never replace a friend like that!

  2. I’m sorry for your loss as well. We lost our 14 1/2 year old American Eskimo Spitz a week ago today, and we are devastated. As a friend told me, pets become a part of your family and take up a furry place in your heart. It’s so true.

  3. I’m sorry for your loss, but glad to hear she went in her sleep, surrounded by love.

  4. (but, to show you the other side… it DOES get better. less pain more just sweet memories)

  5. i COMPLETELY feel your pain. i cried and cried and cried when our yellow lab passed away. dogs are a gift from God no doubt about it.

  6. Thank you all so much for your thoughts and kind words. It really does mean a lot.

  7. oh no, this breaks my heart just reading it.
it truly is like a member of the family is gone, i’ve been through it a couple of times with my cats.
but now, years later, i still think of them all with a big smile on my face.
this is the roughest time, because you’ve lost someone so special, but one day you will think back with a smile too.

lots of love sending your way…

    mila.

  8. I’m so sorry to hear about your loss, she looks like a very sweet girl. The pets that you’ve had for the longest are always the hardest to lose… our childhood dog passed away a few years ago and it’s still weird to go home to my mom’s and not hear her bark when I open the door.

  9. aww, Nikki looks like a sweet, lovable lady indeed. I’m so sorry for your loss. I actually came over here after reading your post on Danni’s blog and I wrote about my pup in my comment! so I understand the love you feel for Nikki, how she was part of the family, and how much she will be missed. just keep these photos handy and remember all the good times you had with her. that will make this hard time a little easier…

  10. Sorry about to hear about your loss. Sounds like she lived a full and happy life with you and your parents. *hug*

  13. what a gorgeous fur baby! I feel your pain and this entry made me cry. I have several elderly cats age 15+ and dread this moment. You are blessed that she went so easily into her new life phase and no illness took her. sending you good energy to help you with your grief!

  14. I’m so sorry for your loss, Lindsay.
When I lost my first cat, Penny, it felt like a part of me went with her- but in return, a part of her stayed with me and still is here.
Nikki is not far away, just a quick hop over the rainbow bridge where she will be waiting for everybody to meet her.

  15. its pretty devastating when u lose a family member and for us they are nothing less..RIP Nikki

  16. I’m so sorry to hear this. It’s always difficult when a pet dies, but epsecially so with the truly beloved ones. Many condolences.

  17. I am so sorry for your loss- loosing a pet is so very hard. It is almost cruel that pets lives are so short. My family dog Libby looks just like her and your post broke my heart.
I will certainly keep your family in my thoughts and prayers.

  18. awh she looks a lot like my dog charlie, who is getting quite old as well. nikki will be missed!

  19. There’s never a good time for them to leave us but rejoice in the many happy years when she was part of the family.

Dogs are everything that is good…I feel your loss.

Your family gave her a wonderful life…so she will rest in peace.

  20. Nikki was a beautiful dog, and I can tell from your post that she was very well loved, which is what counts in the end. I feel the loss of a pet stronger than anyone I’ve met, so I can truly say I know the pain you are feeling.

There are memorial sites online that you can set up, or you can make donations in your pets name, which are wonderful ways to honor their memories.

Her spirit affected your life and therefore, lives on through you. Be strong, and I hope that you are able to get through this difficult time surrounded by those who care and understand.
