The Handmade Feature is officially back, and I couldn’t be more excited about it because it kicks off with Pink Dandy, a vegan-friendly bath and body line made by one of the sweetest, most charismatic ladies on interweb! Janae has become something of an Etsy phenom with her adorable packaging, 41 scents, and products to make you drool, like her Whipped Satin Luxury Cream. Read on for Janae’s advice for the newbie crowd, her thoughts on teaming up with Sephora, and an epic joke.

Q. What’s the story behind Pink Dandy?
A. Pink Dandy was conjured up one year ago last March. I have been in the handmade beauty industry since 2004 (with my other company, Raw Beauty). I wanted a fresh, new skincare company that was vegan friendly and had playful packaging.
Q. I counted 41 different scent choices for your products (holy cow!), so which is your favorite?
A. Yes, there is definitely something for everyone! I actually have 3 different scent categories…dessert, fruit and garden.
I will choose my favorite scent from each category (to be fair, of course!)

Q. If you could create a custom Pink Dandy gift basket for anybody in the world, who would it be? Tell us about it – the scent, the theme, and yada yada yada.
A. I would make gift baskets for all our women in the military who are fighting for our freedom. It would be a nice way to show them our appreciation and give them something to pamper themselves with. I would include shampoos, conditioners, lotions and soaps. I would make these in a variety of scents so that they would have something to look forward to everyday.

Q. What advice do you have for the Etsy newbie crowd?
A. My favorite advice is …don’t give up! Being a newbie can be pretty intimidating, but, there are a lot of Etsians who are willing to give good advice. Make sure you connect with other sellers and buyers by going to the forums and chat rooms.
And, pictures of your products are really important. I believe a picture really is worth a thousand words. You only get one first great impression, so, make your pictures worth looking at.

Q. All your items are completely vegan and cruelty-free. Kudos from me and all my fellow veggies! What made you decide to go that route?
A. I have friends who are vegan. They have expressed their concerns about having a hard time finding vegan friendly skincare products. I have always wanted to produce a line of skincare that would appeal to everyone. Taking care of your skin is totally important and it should be easy to find wonderful beauty products that appeal to your wants and needs.
Q. How do you find the time to balance your two shops, your blog, and everything else that daily life entails?!
A. Oh my goodness! Well, I am lucky enough to work from home and my kids are all in school. I wake up every morning and have a plan for the day all written up on a dry erase board. That keeps my routine on schedule so that I can make sure to get everything done. I end work at 4pm daily so that I can focus on my family.

Q. So the head buyer for Sephora just offered Pink Dandy an exclusive-to-Sephora bath and body line. What will you call your line, and what the heck are you gonna’ do with all this newfound money and fame?
A. This is another tough question. I honestly would decline the offer. I know, what am I thinking, right? Well, I have thought about going bigger with my company and have decided I love where it’s at. I feel that my family is important to me and I would lose a lot of time with them if I had a bigger production. I also feel that the connections you make with your customers are priceless. If my company was on a larger scale, I would lose the wonderful connections I’ve made and besides that, small businesses rock!
Q. Tell us a joke – preferably a bad one.
A. One of my favorite movies is Dog Fight with River Phoenix. There is a joke in that movie that came to mind.

    so my line would be called Stay-K-shun. I like light florals and fruity fragrances so I’d have to play around a bit to come up with a “signature” fragrance.

    Of the 41 scents my favorite is the Peach nectar.
