handmade feature and giveaway | byrdie graphics

June 2, 2010 separator etsy

I can personally attest to the sheer wonderful-ness of Byrdie Graphics, a lovely vinyl decal artiste. My ‘kitchen’ (hardly enough to call it its own room…) has been made new, fresh, and beautiful with pretty little Byrdie poppies. Sometime, when I’m feeling brave and organized enough to give you guys an apartment tour, I’ll show you the kitchen with the pretty little cupboard art. I also have a little birdie on one of my windowpanes and cute little chandelier on the wall. These sellers have some of the best customer service I’ve seen on Etsy or elsewhere. I asked for extra chain length for my chandelier, and they were ridiculously accomodating, and then my decals arrived literally three days later, complete with a test decal and detailed instructions!

Q. What’s the story behind Byrdie Graphics?
A. I always wanted to do something creative, and from my home.  I’ve tried a couple other “at home” jobs that didn’t pan out.  I even started an Etsy shop selling picture frames and onsies that didn’t end up bring in much money.  I learned how to make vinyl graphics years ago and thought, heck!  I can do this!!   I was so grateful to be able to be able to work on my own time with what creative ability I have and be at home with my babies.   As always, it is a risk buying equipment and spending that initial money, but it has been worth it!

Q. What is the best feedback you have ever received on Etsy?
A. Thankfully I get a lot of really great feedback.  I love to hear what people think of the product. This one is from one of my regular customers:

“My first stop for all my wall decal needs… I’ve gone through pages and pages of Etsy wall graphics but always find myself coming back here. Byrdiegraphics designs are elegant, classic, bold, and look like they were painted on. My friends are always touching what I’ve applied and can’t believe how much of a difference these wall graphics make. I could go on and on! Thank you so much for your help and great customer service.”

Q. You’ve had almost 3,000 sales in your Etsy shop alone! Where do you find the time to keep up with your booming business?
A. Well, with 2 year old twins is it HARD to find time!  I do it all when they are happily playing (that doesn’t happen very often :), nap time, and when they have gone to bed.  It doesn’t leave much free time for me, but I find working pretty relaxing.  It is really great to have an outlet other than the cute little kids!

Q. If you could Byrdie-ize any famous building or celebrity home, which would it be, and how would you decorate it?
A. I would love to put bright colored blooms all over Donald Trump’s way-too-gold living room. 🙂

Q. What is the best advice you can give to somebody just starting out on Etsy?
A. Be patient!  It take awhile for people to find you and for sales to start coming in regularly.  The first couple of months I worried myself sick thinking that it wasn’t going to work.  A lot of times you have a product that requires some thought from your buyer.  Like size, how many, what color, etc.  They may fall in love with it today, but not purchase it for 3 months.  The other thing that I think is essential to do is re-post.  You end up giving Etsy a little more money at the end of the month, but you have to keep yourself at the top of the list.  There are so many great artist on Etsy so your stuff will get buried quickly.

Q. If you could only make your decals in one color, which would you choose?
A. Do I really have to choose!  If I were to do them in my own home, my first choices would probably be warm grey, olive, and burnt OJ.

Q. You’ve been featured on NBC! How exciting was that, and did it create a huge surge in business?
A. We’ve got a friend, Courtney Cachet, who is a regular on NBC.  She was kind enough to feature some of our items.  While it didn’t create much more business, it got our name out there.

Q. What is your favorite quote?
A. I’m not much of a quote person, but I do like fortunes from fortune cookies.  I have one taped to my computer that says, “Your business will assume vast proportions.”  Maybe if I read it enough times it will come true!!
